How the Scale Dictionary Works
How the Online Scale Dictionary Works
The IndiPiano Scale Dictionary is a free online scale finder and music theory reference that lets you look up, see and hear 828 different scale and key combinations, with no login and no download. Pick a root key and a scale, and the tool instantly spells every note, shows the step formula (whole and half steps) and the scale degrees, lights up the notes on a piano keyboard or a guitar fretboard, and plays the scale back so your ear learns what the theory looks like.
828 Scale and Key Combinations Across Six Families
Every scale is playable from any of the 12 root keys, and the library covers 12 major and modal scales, 7 minor scale systems (natural, harmonic and melodic minor and their relatives), 7 pentatonic and blues scales, 16 jazz and symmetrical scales (bebop, diminished, whole tone, altered and more), 12 world and traditional scales, and 15 Indian thaats and ragas. Sizes range from 5-note pentatonic scales through 6-note hexatonic and 7-note heptatonic scales to 8-note octatonic scales and the 12-note chromatic scale. You can search by scale name, raga, thaat, alternate name or mood, and every entry carries a short description of its character, such as bright, melancholic, tense or dreamy.
Smart Note Spelling and Accidentals
Notes are spelled with the correct letter names for each scale, so you see proper theory spelling rather than a random mix of sharps and flats. You can leave the accidentals on Auto or force sharps, flats or the common mixed spelling. Notes are also shown in Indian sargam, and alternate names are labelled honestly: true synonyms appear as “Also known as”, while ragas and Carnatic names that only share a note collection appear as “Shares this note set with”, with short notes where a raga’s ascent or phrasing differs from the plain scale.
Piano Layout and Studio-Style Playback
The piano tab highlights the scale notes and the root, and every key can be pressed to hear it. The Play button runs the scale in ascending, descending or ascending and descending order at slow, normal or fast tempo, and flashes each note on the keyboard and in the note table as it sounds. The sound engine is built in the browser with the Web Audio API and offers three synthesised instruments: piano, harmonium and an acoustic guitar modelled with Karplus-Strong plucked-string synthesis.
Guitar Layout with CAGED and 7 Positions
With more than 7,000 generated fretboard maps behind it, the guitar tab draws a full fretboard in standard tuning with fret numbers, open strings and note names. Choose the CAGED system, which maps the scale across the five familiar chord-shape areas, or the 7 Positions system, which uses three notes per string for seven-note scales. Pentatonic scales use the five standard box patterns with correct minor and major shape names. Playback starts on the lowest root of the chosen position, climbs to the highest root and comes back down, and wide patterns carry a note that a hand shift may be needed. Numbers on the board are scale degrees, not finger numbers.
Diatonic Chords and Triads
Below the keyboard, the chord panel builds the diatonic triads of the selected scale with Roman numerals and chord names, and you can click any chord to hear it. For scales that are not seven notes, it lists the triads that can be found inside the scale instead.
Built for Every Screen
The tool is a single lightweight web app written in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with no external libraries. It is fully responsive: the layout, keyboard, fretboard and dropdowns resize to suit phones, tablets and desktops, and it works in modern browsers. Use it to practise scales, study modes, compare ragas and thaats, plan solos, or build ear training and improvisation habits, whether you play piano, guitar, keyboard or sing.
