How the Online Melodica Works

This free online melodica lets you play the breathy, reedy sound of a melodica in your browser, with no download, install or sign-up. It uses recorded samples across 37 keys, so it is handy for simple tunes, song ideas, practice and classroom music. A progress circle shows while the sounds load, and playing starts once every note is ready.

Play with Keyboard, Mouse or Touch

You can play the melodica by clicking its keys, tapping them on a phone or tablet, or using your computer keyboard. The bottom letter row plays the white keys and the row above plays the black keys, and the top letter row and number row take you higher, so the whole keyboard is reachable without moving your hands. The Keys and Notes buttons show or hide the labels, and the Play guide shows the layout.

Breath and Glide

Hold a key to keep the breath going, and drag across the keys for a smooth glide from one note to the next, much like moving along the keyboard while blowing. The illustrated mouthpiece shows the airflow as you play. The Sustain Pedal is on by default, and holding the space bar lets notes ring like a pedal.

Transpose, Volume and Sound Settings

The Sound panel groups its round knobs into Notes, Space, Tone and Master. Notes controls playback speed, transpose, sustain length and touch dynamics, Space adds reverb, room size and echo, Tone shapes bass, mid, treble and warmth, and Master sets stereo width, compression and overall volume. Drag a knob up or down to change it, double-click to reset it, or pick a ready preset such as Concert hall, Warm vintage or Cathedral. The Transpose buttons move the melodica up or down by semitones to match a singer or another instrument, the volume slider goes up to 200 percent, and your settings are remembered for your next visit.

Record, Play Back and Download

Recording is built in. Press Record, play the melodica, and watch your performance appear on a timeline. You can play it back, select a section by dragging across it and clear the take to start over, and the Demo button gives you a ready tune to record. When you are ready, the Download panel saves an MP3 or WAV file, with options for bitrate, sample rate, mono or stereo, the whole recording or the selected part, level normalizing, ringing last notes, silence trimming and fade in or fade out. Your audio is processed in your own browser and never leaves your device.

Works on Every Screen

You can use it on a laptop, tablet or phone, because the layout scales to fit the screen. Switch the theme between light and dark or open full screen with the small buttons at the top right.
