How to Use the Hanon Piano Exercise Trainer

What is the Online Hanon Exercise Trainer?

The IndiPiano Online Hanon Exercise Trainer is a free piano practice tool that runs in your browser, with no login, no download and no app to install. It includes all 20 exercises of Hanon’s “The Virtuoso Pianist” Part I, ready to play in all 12 keys and in four scale types: major, natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor. That gives you 960 ready-made finger exercises for beginners, students and teachers, on desktop, tablet or phone.

How to use it in 4 easy steps

First, pick an exercise, a key and a mode from the three dropdowns. Second, choose how you want to read the notes: Sheet music, A B C letter names or सा रे ग म sargam. Third, press Play and watch the highlighted note, the glowing piano key and the finger number light up together. Fourth, set the Speed to a comfortable tempo (start with the Slow preset) and repeat until it feels smooth. Tap any note in the notation to jump straight to that spot.

Standard music notes and Indian sa re ga ma notation

Every exercise can be read in standard Western notation (C D E F G A B) on a real staff with treble and bass clefs, or in Indian sargam notation: सा रे ग म प ध नि (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni, written in Hindi script). In sargam view, Sa can follow the key you chose or stay fixed on C, and the dots above and below each syllable show the higher and lower octaves. The piano keys can show the same letters or sargam names, so a learner trained in either system can follow along without converting anything in their head.

Finger numbers, hands and a realistic piano

Good fingering is the whole point of Hanon, so finger numbers (1 = thumb to 5 = little finger) are shown on the notes, on the fingertips of the hand pictures and on the keys being played. You can practise both hands, right hand only or left hand only, hide the hands or finger hints once you no longer need them, and choose a 61-key, 88-key or zoom-to-exercise keyboard. Key labels can show all notes, white keys only, only C, or nothing. You can also tap or click the piano keys yourself, and they play and press down like a real piano.

Practice tools that help you improve

Slow the tempo down to as little as 5 BPM with the speed knob or the Slow, Medium and Fast presets, then build up gradually. Switch on the metronome to keep an even pulse, turn on Repeat to loop the exercise, and use the position slider to replay a tricky bar. Volume, sound on or off, a light and dark theme and full screen mode are one tap away, so the trainer feels comfortable in a bright room or a late-night session.

Why practise Hanon exercises?

Hanon exercises build finger strength, speed, evenness and hand independence, and practising them in every key and scale also makes you comfortable with sharps, flats and key signatures. Ten to fifteen minutes a day, played slowly and evenly, works better than rushing. The trainer is free for everyone, works fully in your browser, and is a simple, friendly way to learn piano technique at home.
