How the Free Online MIDI Recorder & Editor Works

The IndiPiano MIDI Recorder & Editor is a complete online MIDI studio that runs in your browser. You can record from a MIDI keyboard or your computer keyboard, edit every note on an FL Studio style piano roll, and download your music as MIDI, WAV or MP3. There is no login, no install and no upload, because everything is processed on your own device.

Record Live with Low-Latency MIDI Input

Connect a USB or Bluetooth MIDI keyboard, choose it in the Input panel and press Record. In Chrome and Edge the recorder reads Web MIDI timestamps and compensates for audio output delay, so the notes land exactly where you played them. You can also tap to calibrate your setup or set a manual offset. No MIDI keyboard? Play the piano on your computer keyboard or screen instead. A built-in metronome, tap tempo and count-in help you stay in time.

Draw, Move, Resize, Split and Copy Notes

The piano roll has a vertical piano on the left, a ruler with a draggable playhead and an overview strip for the whole project. Use the Draw, Select, Erase and Split tools to add notes, drag them, stretch their start and end, cut them in two or duplicate a selection. Drag a box to select several notes and play only that selection. Snap is off by default, so notes move freely, and you can switch to a grid and set Quantize with adjustable strength whenever you want tight timing.

Velocity, Pan and Sustain Pedal Lanes

Three lanes sit under the roll for detailed expression. Edit the velocity of each note, pan notes between left and right, and draw sustain pedal regions by dragging, just like in a professional DAW. Select pedal regions, press Ctrl+A to select all of them and press Delete to remove them. You can minimize the lanes or open the piano roll in full screen with the transport controls attached on top.

Flexible Time Signature and Beat Grid

Choose 4/4, 3/4, 6/8 or a custom meter, and set tempo and tempo changes along the timeline. The grid becomes finer as you zoom in, so you can place notes by bar, beat or smaller subdivisions. Add several tracks, give each one its own colour and pick from 128 preloaded General MIDI voices, with the acoustic grand piano loaded by default.

Studio-Grade Sound Settings

Shape the tone with the Sound panel: master volume, EQ, saturation, compression, reverb and a limiter protect the output from clipping. The same sound chain is used when you export, so the downloaded audio matches what you hear.

Import and Download MIDI, WAV and MP3

Use Import MIDI to open an existing .mid file and keep editing it. When you are done, download the full project as one MIDI file, download each track as its own MIDI file, or render the mix to high-quality WAV or MP3 audio. Undo and redo are available at every step, and keyboard shortcuts such as Space for play, R for record and Ctrl+Z for undo make the workflow quick. The editor adapts to desktop, tablet and mobile screens and offers light and dark themes.
