How It Works - Ear Training
How the Free Online Ear Training App Works
This free ear training app helps musicians learn to recognise notes, intervals, scales, chords and melodies by listening, using one clear visual: a piano keyboard. You do not need an account, a download or any musical background. Open the page, press Start lesson 1, and the app guides you one small step at a time. It is built for pianists, guitarists, singers, producers, students and anyone who wants to play and write music by ear.
Step-by-Step Lessons That Teach You to Listen
The course has 35 lessons in 8 units, moving from hearing whether a note goes higher or lower, through the major scale, intervals, minor scales, modes and Indian thaats, to chords, chord progressions, cadences and melody dictation. Every lesson follows the same path. First you read why the skill matters, then you hear the example played slowly in C major while the notes light up on the piano. Next it is your turn to play it back, then you try the same idea in any key you choose, hear it through all 12 keys, and finish with a short quiz and a recap that explains what you can now do, where you will use it and what comes next. Any step and any lesson can be skipped if you already know it.
How to Use the Ear Training App
Start with the Learn tab and follow the lessons in order, or jump straight to the topic you need. Use the Slow button to hear examples at a gentler pace, the key menu to move a lesson into any of the 12 keys, and the volume slider to set the sound anywhere from silent to double volume. When a lesson ends, open the Practice tab to train the same skill with exercises. Pick an exercise, choose a level, listen, and answer by naming what you hear or by playing it on the piano. If you get stuck, press Hint, replay the sound, or listen to your own answer to hear the difference. A short session each day builds your ear faster than one long session each week.
Practice Exercises That Never Feel Repetitive
The Practice tab offers 15 exercise types: keyboard and note recognition, scale degrees, melody dictation, higher or lower, melodic contour, intervals, scales, thaats, chords, chord inversions, chord progressions, cadences, note counting and meter. Each one has five levels that grow from easy to expert, a Wild Card level that mixes everything, and a custom mode where you choose exactly what to include. Keys, notes, chord types and instrument sounds change from question to question, so every session is different, and a Mixed challenge combines all exercises at once. Questions you miss come back more often so weak spots get extra attention.
How Ear Training Helps Your Music
A trained ear lets you work out songs without sheet music, recognise chords and keys while listening, sing and play in tune, improvise with confidence, write melodies and harmonies that sound right, and communicate with other musicians faster. The lessons teach movable solfège and Sargam names alongside letter names, so you can think in the way that suits your style, whether Western or Indian classical. Every scale, chord and interval is spelled correctly in every key, so what you see on the piano matches proper music theory.
Private, Free and Ready on Any Device
Everything runs inside your browser. The app does not ask you to sign up, does not track your activity and does not save your progress, so every visit starts fresh. It adapts to phones, tablets and desktop screens, offers a light and a dark theme, and has a fullscreen button for distraction-free practice. Use headphones or speakers, find a quiet moment, and let your ears do the work.
